Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy is a treatment which can be used to effectively treat the underlying causes of dry eye syndrome.

What is IPL, and How Does it Work?

IPL therapy is a painless, in-office treatment which treats the underlying cause of dye eye syndrome

The procedure involved gentle light pulses being delivered to the skin adjacent to the eyes. This serves to reduce inflammation in the area, and eliminate bacterial infections. The light pulses also melt the secretions on the eyelids, release oil that may have built up, and unclog the meibomian glands.

It helps ensure the oil resumes proper flow of oil into the tears, which ensures they don’t evaporate too quickly, and thus relieve dry eye symptoms.

At the start of your IPL treatment, the doctor will place eye shields over your eyes to protect them from the light pulses. Following this, a thin layer of cooling gel will be put onto the skin around the eyes, since it is also a sensitive area.

The procedure itself involves the doctor holding a small device over the eyelids, which emits pulses of light. The heat from these causes the secretions blocking the meibomian glands to melt.

Once the procedure is completed, the doctor may express the glands to stimulate normal oil flow and make sure the procedure did what it was supposed to do.

What to Expect Following Treatment

In many cases, patients will see a noticeable improvement in their dry eye symptoms after just one or two IPL treatments. However, it is still recommended to come back for monthly treatments over a four month timespan in order to make sure you get the best possible results.

In particularly severe cases, the doctor may recommend additional treatments to ensure that healthy meibomian gland function is maintained and the condition does not return. Sometimes, the doctor will recommend another form of treatment in addition to IPL to achieve the best results.

When Should You Seek Out IPL Therapy?

If you are suffering from chronic dry eye, and it is negatively affecting your quality of life, your doctor may recommend IPL therapy to you, as a treatment designed to provide long lasting relief, as opposed to other treatment options such as artificial tears and warm compresses, which only provide short term symptom relief.

Vision therapy is well worth the response, time and effort. Our Son had a hard time focusing and writing neatly. After vision therapy Seth could complete a task in half the time if previously took. His abilities to focus improved greatly and so did his handwriting.

Also, he was better at listening. As a parent, we wanted learning to be fun for our Son, and vision therapy made this possible.

Vision Therapy has given or son the tools he needs to be able to scan and read the written word more effectively and efficiently.

He love working with John and these working sessions give him the motivation to gladly work on his homework assignments.

It amazed us to see the difference in the tracking of his eyes and along a line of it's from the beginning to the end of the treatment.

Dr. McBryar , Kristen and John  are all marvelous and we would recommend them to anyone I only wish that we would have found them sooner!

Prior to coming to the institute for vision development my son complained of daily headaches. Therapy has eliminated his headaches completely. I love knowing my son is able to learn pain-free for the rest of his life because of the work that has been done over just a few weeks in this office. He he absolutely loved coming that didn't even feel like going to a doctor or therapy. We are grateful for the relief he was able to find by coming here.

Thank you!

When we first came to the practice, my son did not have huge issues, but lots of small ones- trouble with reading, sports (hitting the baseball consistently), coordination, etc- that were not easily detectable, but when put together presented issues. The staff here were all very professional and loving towards him. While I was concerned in the reading, my son was concerned with the athletic side. Seeing improvement night off the bat gave him confidence that i have nor seen in him and made him want to not only Come to therapy, but also made him want to work hard. He has surpassed his grade level and above in reading and hit his first home run this year! Thank you!!!
