Understanding Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation

Neuro-optometric rehabilitation is a form of vision therapy which helps the patient strengthen the visual skills they need to perform regular daily activities and achieve an improved quality of life. In particular, neuro-optometric rehabilitation focuses on helping patients who are suffering from vision issues caused by a traumatic brain injury (such as a car accident or a stroke).

Neuro-optometrists are specially trained to diagnose and treat the vision problems caused by traumatic brain injuries, as well as those stemming from neurological conditions.

What Sort of Conditions Can Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Treat?

As mentioned above, neuro-optometric rehabilitation can treat vision issues stemming from a wide range of traumatic brain injuries. Below is a list of several examples. If you have experienced any of the following incidents, schedule a functional vision evaluation with one of our neuro-optometrists to determine if your vision issues can be treated via neuro-optometric rehabilitation.

  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Sports collisions
  • Strokes and other cerebrovascular accidents
  • Physical violence

What Vision Issues Can Traumatic Brain Injuries Cause?

Traumatic brain injuries can lead to a wide range of vision issues which can impact one’s quality of life. While many of these vision issues can also be caused by other problems, when they are caused by traumatic brain injuries they are likely not problems with the eyes themselves, rather with the brain-eye connection. These symptoms include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
  • Decreased peripheral vision
  • Difficulty focusing the eyes or controlling eye movement
  • Vision loss in one or both eyes
  • Eye strain
  • Light sensitivity
  • Difficulty focusing on tasks
  • Motion sensitivity
  • Visual memory loss
  • Headaches or eye pain

How do Traumatic Brain Injuries Affect Vision?

We receive a huge percentage of our sensory information via the eyes. But the visual system extends beyond the eyes, to the brain, which has to properly receive and then interpret this information.

Traumatic brain injuries can interfere with this important flow of information, leading to vision issues even if the eyes themselves are undamaged by whatever caused the traumatic brain injury.

Important Questions About Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation

What is the Treatment Process?

If a patient is suffering from a vision issue following a traumatic brain injury, the first step is a comprehensive eye exam so the neuro-optometrist can get a sense of the overall health of the eyes. Following this, and a review of any medical documentation from other medical care professionals who have been providing treatment in other areas, the neuro-optometrist will perform a neuro-visual assessment to pinpoint the exact conditions present, at which point a personalized treatment plan can be crafted.

How Long Does Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Take to Work?

There is no hard answer to this question, as a lot depends on the nature of the problem, which is different in every case.

What you can expect is to see some level of improvement fairly quickly, though one should not expect a complete turnaround overnight. Neuro-optometric rehabilitation is a gradual process, and it takes time to retrain the eyes and brain to work together in the way they should--especially if the problem(s) caused by the injury are severe.

Additionally, proper compliance with the treatment measures is vital in order to see the proper results. While much of the rehabilitation is done in office, there may be exercises to perform at home, and the patient must be vigilant about doing them.

Summary

Neuro-optometric rehabilitation is a form of vision therapy aimed at correcting vision issues caused by traumatic brain injuries (such as car accidents, sports injuries, and strokes) and neurological disorders. These injuries can impact the brain-eye connection and lead to several types of vision problems even though the eyes themselves may be functioning normally. Neuro-optometric vision therapy is a highly individualized treatment that helps retrain the patient’s eyes and brain to work together properly, so that they can regain the same level of functionality and quality of life they had before the injury.

Vision therapy is well worth the response, time and effort. Our Son had a hard time focusing and writing neatly. After vision therapy Seth could complete a task in half the time if previously took. His abilities to focus improved greatly and so did his handwriting.

Also, he was better at listening. As a parent, we wanted learning to be fun for our Son, and vision therapy made this possible.

Vision Therapy has given or son the tools he needs to be able to scan and read the written word more effectively and efficiently.

He love working with John and these working sessions give him the motivation to gladly work on his homework assignments.

It amazed us to see the difference in the tracking of his eyes and along a line of it's from the beginning to the end of the treatment.

Dr. McBryar , Kristen and John  are all marvelous and we would recommend them to anyone I only wish that we would have found them sooner!

Prior to coming to the institute for vision development my son complained of daily headaches. Therapy has eliminated his headaches completely. I love knowing my son is able to learn pain-free for the rest of his life because of the work that has been done over just a few weeks in this office. He he absolutely loved coming that didn't even feel like going to a doctor or therapy. We are grateful for the relief he was able to find by coming here.

Thank you!

When we first came to the practice, my son did not have huge issues, but lots of small ones- trouble with reading, sports (hitting the baseball consistently), coordination, etc- that were not easily detectable, but when put together presented issues. The staff here were all very professional and loving towards him. While I was concerned in the reading, my son was concerned with the athletic side. Seeing improvement night off the bat gave him confidence that i have nor seen in him and made him want to not only Come to therapy, but also made him want to work hard. He has surpassed his grade level and above in reading and hit his first home run this year! Thank you!!!
