Abstract/Introduction

Objective

To compare home-based pencil push-ups (HBPP), home-based computer vergence/accommodative therapy and pencil push-ups (HBCVAT+), office-based vergence/accommodative therapy with home reinforcement (OBVAT), and office-based placebo therapy with home reinforcement (OBPT) as treatments for symptomatic convergence insufficiency (CI).

Methods

In a randomized clinical trial, 221 children 9 to 17 years with symptomatic CI were assigned to one of four treatments.

Main Outcome Measures

Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey (CISS) score after 12 weeks of treatment. Secondary outcomes were near point of convergence (NPC) and positive fusional vergence at near (PFV)

Conclusion/Results

Results

After 12 weeks of treatment the OBVAT group’s CISS score (15.1) was statistically significantly lower than the HBCVAT+, HBPP, and OBPT groups’ scores of 21.3, 24.7, and 21.9, respectively (P < 0.001). The OBVAT group also demonstrated a significantly improved NPC and PFV compared with the other groups (P <= 0.005). A successful or improved outcome for the OBVAT, HBPP, HBCVAT+, and OBPT groups was found in 73%, 43%, 33%, and 35%, respectively.

Conclusion

Twelve weeks of OBVAT results in a significantly greater improvement in symptoms and clinical measures of NPC and PFV and a greater percentage of patients reaching pre-determined criteria of success when compared with HBPP, HBCVAT+, or OBPT.

Vision Therapy has given or son the tools he needs to be able to scan and read the written word more effectively and efficiently.

He love working with John and these working sessions give him the motivation to gladly work on his homework assignments.

It amazed us to see the difference in the tracking of his eyes and along a line of it's from the beginning to the end of the treatment.

Dr. McBryar , Kristen and John are all marvelous and we would recommend them to anyone I only wish that we would have found them sooner!

When we first came to the practice, my son did not have huge issues, but lots of small ones- trouble with reading, sports (hitting the baseball consistently), coordination, etc- that were not easily detectable,but when put together presented issues. The staff here were all very professional and loving towards him. While I was concerned in the reading, my son was concerned with the athletic side. Seeing improvement night off the bat gave him confidence that i have nor seen in him and made him want to not only Come to therapy, but also made him want to work hard. He has surpassed his grade level and above in reading and hit his first home run this year! Thank you!!!
